Meet Erik Ammerlaan, a 49-year-old professional from the United States who has made Eindhoven his home while working at NXP Semiconductors. Discover his journey, insights, and what life as an expat in the Netherlands truly entails.

Before we start, could you please introduce yourself?

• Hi there. I am Erik Ammerlaan. I am a 49-year old expat from the United States living in Eindhoven and working for NXP Semiconductors. Although I was born in the Netherlands, I have lived my whole life in the United States. It is nice to back “home” again. When I’m not working and not confined, I enjoy eating Afghan and Persian cuisine at Saffraan and drinking a cup of coffee at Koffiehuisje, Coffeelab, or Van Piere.

When it comes to staying away from home for business, finding somewhere that is more than just a place to sleep can make all the difference. Why did you choose a serviced apartment of Corporate Housing Factory (instead of a hotel). What are the perks?

• I had 2 choices for corporate housing in Eindhoven. In the end, I chose Hartje Gent for its proximity to the city center, the modern design of the apartment, and the ability to also accommodate my dog, Brandy, who relocated with me.

Last year a lot changed due to COVID-19. Can you tell me about your experiences as an expat in the Netherlands in times of corona? Were you able to see something of the beautiful city Eindhoven? If so, what did you enjoy most?

• I was able to take many pictures throughout Eindhoven (@azdsrtdvl IG), experience Dutch Design Week, the GLOW light festival, working out at a local gym called Trifecta that is run by 2 US expats, visit the local Tuesday and Saturday markets in the short time I have been here, get my picture taken by a photography student (Kim Roelofs, @picture.kim IG) and ride my eBike to Belgium for lunch among many other things. Each of these experiences allowed me to get out and see different parts of Eindhoven and truly immerse myself in the Dutch culture. Eindhoven has a really good vibe with its mix of young, old, and international people.

Which wine/band/app/take-away place has kept you alive and well during the coronavirus crisis?

• I did not let the corona virus crisis keep me cooped up inside. I chose to take advantage of the situation by getting out and going to the grocery store for my provisions. Everything was super convenient, super accessible, and I felt safe doing so.

Is there something you want to share with our community about working from (a temporary) home during these times?

• The temporary home had all of the conveniences that I needed to comfortably live for the time I needed it. If there was anything that was not available, the onsite host, Jody, was right there to meet my immediate needs. Her help and attention made the experience all the better and less stressful as I navigated my next steps. 

And last but not least; what is the first thing you want to do when all corona measures are suspended?I want to be able enjoy the nightlife some more. I want to experience more bars, the eclectic restaurants, and dance clubs Eindhoven has to offer. I also want to use Eindhoven as a launching point to travel more within the EU without restrictions. There is so much to do and see.
